V21 Digital Summit talk about breaking down the barriers to innovation in Australia

I was invited to speak at The V21 Digital Summit, which is AIMIA’s leading annual conference in Victoria, specifically within the theme of international vs local. My talk focused on breaking down the barriers to innovation in Australia, inspired by my experiences in London and as a reaction to what I felt to be the disproportionate media and industry response to the news that Australia ranks badly in the innovation league.

I focused on how it is a fear of losing and failure that holds Australia back and not a lack of talent or resources, so I took my Springbok-supporting life in my hands by showing this image. Just a bit of fun to make a point!

Predominantly, I have found that Australia performs well to exceptionally well in all the areas (but one) that constitute an innovative workforce (entrepreneurship, tolerance, creativity, confidence, leadership, activity). Risk Aversion is the one key ingredient holding us back. In my talk, I show examples of how a large organisation can shift their thinking and their environment to help the innovation process along a little bit.
