When I was researching How We Talk About Work, I was told many times that ‘It all comes down to leadership.’ Designers, techs, strategists and creatives felt that their key needs would only be met if the right leaders were in place. They also told me that, as leaders, they were struggling to meet the overwhelming and growing expectations being placed on them.

I’ve been talking to digital talent around the world in all levels of leadership, from those who are new to leading all the way to c-suite executives and business owners. They told me about the leadership they loved and didn’t like, how they felt about being leaders and what they felt was changing. Thank you so much to everyone who graciously gave their time and their stories.

The How We Talk About books share the words of people who have complex skills that are both respected and misunderstood; organisations need them but don’t always want to hear them. As one reader said ‘Reading the quotes is gold. Like hearing the conversations people really have at lunchtime, away from their managers.’ So this book isn’t a typical leadership book. It isn’t going to instruct you on how to lead and the words aren’t crafted thought leadership from profiled industry titans. It is designed to inspire more authentic conversations within your own workplaces about how the leadership ecosystem really works for valuable creative makers, so we can make it better for them and for everyone.
